Key terms and concepts in namespace security

Asset

Any digital identifier associated with an organization, including domains, subdomains, certificates, and email infrastructure.

Dangling DNS

A DNS record that points to a resource that is no longer in use, creating a security vulnerability.

DMARC

Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance. An email authentication protocol that helps prevent email spoofing.

Domain

A human-readable name that identifies a website or other internet resource.

Namespace

The collection of all digital identifiers associated with an organization.

Phishing

A type of social engineering attack where an attacker sends a fraudulent message designed to trick a victim into revealing sensitive information.

SPF

Sender Policy Framework. An email authentication protocol that helps prevent email spoofing.

Subdomain

A domain that is part of a larger domain.

Subdomain Takeover

A type of attack where an attacker gains control of a subdomain.

Typosquatting

A type of attack where an attacker registers a domain name that is a common misspelling of a popular brand.
